Magnificent mountain ranges with peaks above 2500 m have majestic alpine character, dominate the Bulgarian landscape and are a great place for hiking and climbing, both in the summer and in winter. There are popular tourist centers with ski runs in the Rila and Rhodope Mountains and Balkans. The ski season high in the mountains takes up to 190 days. The popular winter sports centers with ski lifts and runs, hotels and restaurants [open year-round] are Borovec [Rila], Pamporovo [the Rhodopes], Bansko [Pirin], Vitosha, Triavna, Gabrovo, Aprilci, Trojan, Teteven [Stara Planina]. Hiking, biking, and horse riding are popular in the mountains. Paragliding and powered hang gliding, rock climbing, spelunking are also available.
