Pamporovo - more information and facts
Pamporovo is located on approx. 1650 m above sea level in the Perelik range of the Western Rhodopi in one of the most beautiful places of the Orpheus mountain. It received its name from the convoys of mules of the local man Raicho Belev which followed one another as the wagons of a train (from the Turkish word for "train" - pampor) carrying goods. A man from Chepelare - Chichovsky - built the first tourist hostel here in 1933 thus establishing the present resort. The specific combination of natural conditions makes the resort beautiful in summer and in winter alike - the large spruce forests, picture- ensue meadows, strange rocky forms (the Orpheus rock and others), beautiful high peaks - Snejanka (1925), Murgavetz (1858), Orleto etc. The mountain where Pamporovo is located is composed of marble that drains the water and dries the whole region. The hill has a hunchbacked form and is very airy so the air is always fresh. Due to the influence of the Mediterranean climate the tem- peratures in the resort have small daily variations. The surrounding high peaks keep it from the winds and in winter preserve the snow cover on the Northern slopes of the Snejanka and Murgavetz peaks. The area is abundant in natural slopes where many ski slopes have been built with different category of difficulty, served by sophisticated technical equipment. The resort offers 5 chair lifts, 13 tow-lifts and 17.500 meters of alpine ski-tracks. Pamporovo is 16 kilometers from Smolyan , 12 km from Chepelare , 35 kilometers from Devin, 83 km from Plovdiv and 240 km from Sofia . There is a regular bus line connecting it to these cities. The high TV and radio transmission tower on the Snejanka Peak with a panorama cafe where the whole resort can be views in a clear day can be reached by chair lift. Pamporovo offers many lodging opportunities for tourists. A number of cosy restaurants offer traditional local and Bulgarian cuisine. An example is the folk restaurant (Mehana) "Chevermeto" where the visitor should try the incredible Rhodope lamb kebab. Pamporovo is the starting point for many marked tourist tracks to: Smolyan ski ezera hut (2 h 15 min or 40 min by two lifts), Izgrev Hut (in Chernatitsa - 6 h.), Momchil Yunak hut (in Prespa - 4h30m), Perelik hut (under the mountain leader of Golyam Perelik Peak - 4h30m), the village of Progled (1h30m), the city of Smolyan (3h), The Orpheus Rock (20 min from the Peak of Snejanka), the Murgavets Peak (1h).
