The Bulgarian wines – strong or mild, old or young, fresh fruit flavored – have an original and unforgettable taste. The Bulgarian tradition of wine making has a long and interesting history. It dates back to the Thracian times – the Thracians were the first wine producers in Europe. In the 6th century, the Thracian kings organized wine feasts and talked about the battles and planned warfare. There are many local types of grapevine, including Mavrud, Melnik and Gamza. The Bulgarian producers keep to the tradition of wine making with using old techniques but recently they have introduced modern production processes that meet the requirements of the clients and demand for strong high quality wines.
Bulgaria is the 5th wine exporting country in the world. February 14 is the St Trifon Zarezan day – he is the patron of vineyards. The vines are cut and sprinkled with wine for good harvest on that day.
