Bulgarian wine labels – the meanings of signatures

  • Reserve, special category of wines that mature in barrique barrels, can be declared as wines of a given geographical area or AOC

  • Reserve specjale – the wine has been maturing for at least 2 years

  • Selection specjale – – the wine has been maturing for 3 years or more

  • Premium – only one variety of wine grapes was used for production

  • Premium reserve – best quality wine, from one harvest or variety

  • Vin de collection – part of the Reserve Specjale part, though not more than a half

  • Baric – the wine was maturing in an oak barrel, 500 l volume

  • Premium oak – the wine was fermenting in a new oak barrel thanks to which it has an oak aroma and aftertaste.

  • AOC, as in France, the wines have to be made of strictly defined varieties in a strictly defined micro-region, with strictly defined hectare efficiency and defined minimal sugar content in the vines. These wines constitute only 2% of the total production! AOC: Novo Selo, Varna Lositza, Iujen Briag Pavlikeni, Sungulare Suhindol, Oriachovitza Svischtov, Sakar Liaskovetz, Stambolovo Russenski Briag, Assenovgrad Kralevo, Brestnik Khan Krum, Rozova Dolina Novi Pazar, Harsovo.
