there are seven varieties of local grapes, which can be divided to two species: rare and late ripening. The late ripening ones are: Red Misket, Dimiat, Gamza, Mavrud, Siroka Melnishka Loza. The rare ripening are: Pamid, Vranchsky Misket.

late ripening:
  •
    Red Misket
    - white grape variety, very popular throughout Bulgaria but mostly in the Sungurlare Valley and Karlovo areas. The leaf is large, almost round. It’s covered with moss that looks like cobweb on top, and with hairy moss on the bottom. The bunch is usually medium sized. The grains are succulent; the skin is not too thick, stringy, from pinkish to red. High quality dry white wines with pleasant light aroma are made of this variety of grapes.
  • Dimiat - white variety of grapes. It is grown in all regions of Bulgaria, but mainly in the Eastern area. The leaves are large and wrinkled, with cobweb-like moss on top and ‘hairy’ moss on the bottom side. The grains are large, oval, a bit succulent and smell of vanilla. The skin is medium thick, stringy and yellow-green. This variety is used for making white wines and ingredients for wine brandy.
  • Gamza - the Gamza variety ripens late. It is most popular in the central part of northern Bulgaria in the areas of Sozopol, Pleven and Novo Selo. It is the most popular red Bulgarian variety. The leaves are large, wide rather long and a bit juicy. The skin is not too thick, delicate, blue and black. Gamza is used for making red wines of faint color; these wines can mature.
  • Mavrud - red variety of grapes. Popular in Southern Bulgaria [mainly in the area of Asenovgrad, Plovdiv, Pazardik, Cirpan, Stara Zagora and Nowa Zagora]. The leaves are large. Bunches are large, not cramped. The grains are medium large, succulent, juicy. The skin is medium thick, dark blue. The wines made of this variety have intense color and can mature for a long time.
  • Siroka Melnishka Loza - very late ripening Bulgarian variety of grapes. The name suggests it is most popular in the Melnik area. It is thought to be the old Thracian variety of grapes. The leaves are large. Bunch is medium large, medium cramped or cramped. The grains are medium large, round and juicy. The skin is thick and stringy, blue and black. The wines made of this variety are characteristic of deep red color, and long maturing enhances their taste.
rare ripening:
  • Pamid - it is the oldest Bulgarian variety of grapes. It is grown mainly in the southern areas of Bulgaria. The leaves are medium large, round and a little curved. The bunch is medium large. The grains are large and elongated. The skin is thin, delicate, a bit transparent, and red. The wines made of this variety have faint color. They are light and have to be drunk fast.
  • Vrachanski Misket - – local variety of Misket, also known as Tvarda Tamianka. Most popular in the area of the Vraca city. The leaves are medium large and round. The bunches are small to medium. The grains are medium large. The skin is thick, stringy, yellow and green with brown spots. This variety is used for making wines of strong and lasting aroma.
