Agriculture

Bulgaria offers excellent natural conditions for agriculture development. There are about 4.9 million hectares of farmlands [44% of the country area.] Exceptional natural and weather conditions, good quality soils and agricultural tradition contribute to relatively good development of farming and cultivation. Wheat, barley, corn, sunflowers, tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, watermelons, tobacco and grapes are the main crops and growing.

Great dispersal of farms and often complicated legal situation of the land [it impedes the consolidation] are the basic limitations of development of the agricultural industry. Regulations adjusting the agricultural market to the EU accession requirements by increasing the competitiveness of farms were introduced in 2000 – 2005.

The Bulgarian agriculture is also a beneficiary of the EU aid funds. Moreover, the farmers [and the producers of cotton as well] get financial support from the National Agricultural Fund [about 140 million EUR in 2006 – 2007].

The farmers had to adjust their production standards to the requirements of the EU. According to research results made and published in January 2006 by the Agriculture Economics Research Institute, about 70% of the farmers have made investments related to meeting the quality and safety standards of production.
